The UK government has recently announced the imminent rollout of digital driving licences that will be accessible through a dedicated government app on mobile phones and can also serve as proof of age. Scheduled for a summer launch, the new Gov.UK app aims to be a one-stop-shop for various government services, including a digital "wallet" feature to store official documents.

The app's capabilities will start with the storage of veterans' cards, followed by a trial of the digital driving licence system later this year. To ensure security, the digital wallet will tap into advanced smartphone features like facial recognition.

This mirrors the secure processes people use for mobile banking payments, where security is paramount. The government, however, has reassured the public that the digital licence will be optional, with traditional physical documents still being issued.

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has outlined ambitious plans to expand the range of documents available on the app by the end of 2027. This includes DBS checks and other government-issued credentials.

He explained: "Gov.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually. For those who opt to use Gov.UK Wallet, it will be easier to prove entitlement to benefits or verify their age when purchasing alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before."

The initiative is set to revolutionise how we interact with public services by placing personal data control in the hands of individuals. The system overhaul is underway.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has championed the new tech as a "game-changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID."

She further stated: "The innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure. We are delivering on the Plan for Change by making public services work for everyone."

This digital leap is part of an ambitious strategy to achieve £45 billion in efficiency savings through the adoption of digital tools and data to improve public services, which includes bringing AI tools into the Civil Service to speed up processes in Whitehall.
