Most Britons support introducing a levy on second homes, with the aim of using the revenue generated to fund more social housing. A YouGov poll of 2,157 people, conducted for the think tank Common Wealth, found that over two-thirds of respondents also backed higher taxes on buy-to-let properties.

Councils nationwide are struggling to address the issue of "home hoarding", which includes holiday homes and empty properties that could be repurposed. One proposed solution is to increase council tax on unoccupied or rarely occupied homes, either to deter the practice or raise additional funds. Cornwall Council is introducing a 100 per cent council tax premium on second homes from April.
According to the poll, more than two-thirds of Britons support taxing second homes to help fund social housing, while 62% believe taxes on buy-to-let properties should also increase.
Mathew Lawrence, head of Common Wealth, commented: "Our new analysis shows there is broad support for ambitious reform of the housing system across different social groups."
He added: "We found widespread support for raising capital gains tax on additional properties, across voting preferences and including among groups with more housing wealth, like outright owners."
Labour supporters are showing strong backing for tax reforms, with nearly 79% favouring an increased capital gains tax on second homes and 73% supporting a rise on buy-to-let properties. Even among Conservative voters, there's a notable lean towards these changes64% endorse higher capital gains tax on secondary residences, and 53% agree with the same for buy-to-lets.
Reform UK followers also share this sentiment, with 63% in favour of taxing second homes and 59% for buy-to-lets.
The Scottish Parliament has recently approved a tax increase on second and holiday home acquisitions, anticipated to generate an extra £30 million for public services.
Commenting on the issue, Mr Lawrence said: "From building more social housing to taxing those with surplus housing wealth, it is clear the public want change. With the government focussing on delivery this year to address Britain's overlapping crises a bold agenda on housing is critical."
