EastEnders icon Natalie Cassidy has reportedly quit her role as Sonia Fowler on the BBC soap after 32 years.

The much-loved actress arrived in Albert Square back in 1993 when the Jackson family debuted on show. The character is currently at the centre of a thrilling storyline involving her current partner Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) who killed his comatose wife Debbie.

Sonia was arrested for the crime and subsequently spent time in prison on remanded awaiting trial. However, the expectant mum was found not guilty by a jury and was allowed to return to Walford.

Her verdict came after her sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) wrongly confessed to Debbie's murder in a bid to be released from captivity by Reiss.

In a statement shared by The Sun, Cassidy said: "I feel extremely sad to be writing this, but also very excited. After another 11 solid years back on The Square, I have decided it’s time to move on to pastures new.

"EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show."

She added: "Thank you to Chris Clenshaw for the opportunity to be such a big part of the 40th anniversary – it’s an honour. See ya, Sonia, going but never forgotten."
